*Ruling class should take the blame for the
woes that bedevil Nigeria Youths!
Press Statement
The
Socialist Party of Nigeria, SPN, Oyo State Chapter, receives with disdain the
media report recently credited to Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the Oyo State governor,
over his claim of how he was able to pay his tuition fees as a student in
abroad through his earning as a poor and part-time morgue worker in United States
of America, USA.
The media report has it that Senator Abiola Ajimobi
of Oyo State said “he washed dead body
to pay tuition fee in abroad” on Monday, 8th January, 2018 during
his address at a South-West Youths Regional Summit in Osogbo while urging youths
to see hard work as the only way to success. Both the statement and the motive
behind its pronouncement capture the attention of SPN. This is because the
statement further exposes how inhuman and insensitive Ajimobi-led government
and other government that preceded it in the state has been to the need and
aspiration of workers and the poor people in the state.
Common
sense would have expected that Senator Ajimobi, the current governor of Oyo
State who was able to pay for his cost of education in US through the meagre
salary he earned as a morgue workers to have understood the importance of
regular payment of salary no matter how meagre to the survival of workers and
their family. Unfortunately, this is not the case as far as Senator Ajimobi-led
government of Oyo State is concerned. So unfortunate to note that, the Oyo
State government which is current under his leadership still owe workers’
salaries and allowances that range from 3 to 15 months.
Since
December 2, 2017, workers across the six Oyo State tertiary institutions have
embarked on indefinite strike to protest against the government refusal to pay
them their 15 month salary arrears. This is despite the fact that, the same
Ajimobi-led government has received bail-out fund from the federal government
excluding other billions of Naira received as the state share of Paris refund.
This is quite inhuman and high level of insensitivity on the side of Senator
Ajimpbi-led government. Imagine! Would it have been possible for Senator
Ajimobi to be educated in US if his salary as a poor morgue worker through
which he claimed he paid his tuition had been denied the same way he owes Oyo
State workers today?
Again,
it wouldn’t have been possible for him to work at first place as students if
the opportunity for job was not have been created. The question is how many of
such an opportunity for graduates to work has been created by Senator Abiola
Ajimobi since the inception of his administration in 2015 let alone citizen of
the state who are still students across state-owned tertiary institutions which
are poorly funded?
It
is in the light of this that SPN strongly insists that all forms of woes like
non-productivity, unemployment, lack of access to public education among others
that bedevil the youths today are largely caused by the irresponsible attitude
of members of the ruling class both in government and business to the need of
the Nigeria youths.
It
is true that hard work is meant to be a gateway to success, but this is not the
case as far as Nigeria situation is concerned especially when there are millions of Nigerian
graduates who continue to remain unemployed after they have worked hard as students
in their various and respective capacity to earn the certificate. Except and
until the ruling class begin to give a priority to the area of need of the
youths in term of creation of gainful employment opportunities and improvement
in living condition of the working people in general, SPN will always decry any
cynical advice from the ruling class that Nigeria youth should work hard as
this gives false impression that the woes that bedevil the youths today is
caused by their laziness.
SPN
as a party that forced its registration and recognition by INEC through the
struggle of youths, workers and working
people in general will continue to build its influence among the working people
by identifying with their daily struggle for a better life with a view to form
a pro-people government with a socialist programme of collective ownership of
the commanding height of economy placed under the democratic control and
management of workers and masses to liberate the resources necessary and needed to meet the area of needs of the
youths and the working people for a genuine transformation of their living
condition.
