ABUJA DEMOLITION TRAGEDY:

ANOTHER EVIDENCE OF THE ANTI-POOR CHARACTER OF THE GOVERNMENT

PRESS STATEMENT

We of the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) condemn the heartless killing of a baby girl in Lungu, a settlement within Abuja Model City, by demolition bulldozer of the Federal Capital Territory Authority. The killing of the baby along the suicide by the mother of the child sparked off protests by the squatters and others within the settlement.

According to media reports, a combined team of police, navy, air force and army operatives were sent along with the bulldozers to enforce the demolition of buildings on a parcel of land in the settlement. Media reports also confirmed that the demolition exercise was done for an “influential person”, who had reportedly used his clout to acquire the property.

We see this savage action as another instance of the deep-seated anti-poor character of the Goodluck Jonathan regime. We also condemn the land grabbing in the Federal Capital Territory, which has left millions of working class elements homeless.

We commend the resilience of the mass of the working people who took to the streets to protest the madness, which forced the security operatives to flee. We call for further mass actions to compel the authorities of the Federal Capital Terrority to provide compensation for the family of the baby girl and the mother.

However, without a working people’s political alternative speedily coming to power, the attack on democratic rights would continue unabated. On this basis, we call on workers, students, youth, artisans to join the Socialist Party of Nigeria to fight for the enthronement of a working people’s government to mobilize the enormous wealth of society to meet the basic needs of the millions and not the millionaires including housing among others.

Chinedu Bosah
National Secretary, SPN
